What do Texaco and TWA Have in Common? Wings Of Texaco has the Answer!

The Wings Of Texaco series has been bringing the excitement, color, and history of the Texaco aircraft fleet into our homes since 1993. This year is a special treat for the student of aviation history. The regular and special editions share the same famous wing number, but the versions offer different graphics.

Wings of Texaco Airplane Series #24 (2016) Special Edition in Silver with TWA (Trans World Airlines) Graphics - 1937 Lockheed 12A Electra Jr.
Let's start by taking a look at the special edition. Wing number NC18137 is a beautiful 1937 Lockheed 12A Electra Jr. This plane was owned by TWA and was known by the name "Research". It was an aerial laboratory for testing then-new technology that has become ubiquitous with modern aviation such as static discharge and de-icing equipment.

The Lockheed Electra series was known as the "Cadillac" of planes. It is therefore no surprise that both Howard Hughes and Amelia Earhart chose them for their respective "round-the-world" flights. Several celebrities rode in the NC18137 including Bette Davis and Wallace Berry.

In the 1940's, Paul Richter, executive V.P. of TWA, was a good friend of the VP of Texaco, Aubrey Keif. This Friendship no doubt aided the research partnership between the two companies. Take a look at this cool flyer from the 1940's talking about this NC18137 and the partnership between TWA and Texaco!
